Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women
On December 6 each year we remember the 14 lives senselessly lost to violence against women. On December 6, 1989 a gunman entered École Polytechnique, he entered a classroom, ordered the women to line up and the men to leave. He murdered those 14 women and injured many more that day.
On this day of Remembrance and Action we solemnly remember the lives cut short by gender-based hatred and violence. We also recommit ourselves to doing the work needed to end this type of violence. Everyone deserves to be safe when pursuing a post secondary education. The 14 people murdered that day in 1989 had bright lives ahead of them. Lives we must now honour and remember. It bears saying as well that those are not the only lives lost to gender-based violence. This is why we continue the fight to end hate and to ensure safer communities for us all.

Messages of thanks from the Officers of Local 583
Mike Mahar – President/Business Agent
It is an honour to have been acclaimed as President of this Local. Thank you to the Membership for your support. I would like to thank everyone who served in whatever capacity this term. Your work helped us get through these unprecedented times and made our Union that much stronger because of it.
Congratulations to all those re-elected and to everyone who is assuming a new role this term. I look forward to working with you all and continue building on a team dedicated to serving our Members throughout the new term.
On Behalf Of The Officers, Executive Board, Stewards and Local 583 Committee Members, Congratulations to Neil McKinnon on His Retirement. May It Be A Long And Healthy Retirement.
Neil McKinnon – Retiring as Executive Vice President Assistant Business Agent
I am retiring from Calgary Transit and from my position as Vice-President of ATU 583 at the end of the year. I feel overjoyed by the opportunity to not only be able to be a member of a union, but to serve six years as a full-time officer of this Local. Throughout history, many people have worked hard and even gave up their lives so that we can have a united voice in the workplace. Unions have been on the forefront of many positive changes, not only in the workplace, but also in the broader society. I am proud of the actions ATU 583 have taken to make Calgary, Alberta and Canada a better place to work and live. I hope that everyone keeps fighting for a fairer, more just, more equitable society. Thank you for all the support you have given me over the years.
Renée Dunn – Incoming Executive Vice President Assistant Business Agent
Thank you to everyone who voted for me, inspired me, encouraged me, motivated me and believed in me. I will do my best to represent and to keep advocating for us all. I know I didn’t achieve this alone and I know I can’t do this without your support. I am humbled and so thankful to be your next ATU 583 Vice President. Cheers to us all!
Harry Lew – Financial Secretary Treasurer
I would like to sincerely thank the Membership for their support over the last three years and for re-electing me to the office of Financial Secretary Treasurer. I am genuinely grateful for another chance to serve our Membership and I appreciate everyone who put their faith in my abilities. I look forward to the 2023-2025 term and the opportunities it brings.
Bill Johnson – Recording Secretary Maintenance/Office
On the heels of the General Election for Our Local, I am truly appreciative and honored on my re-election to the position of Recording Secretary Maintenance/Office Representative for a fifth consecutive term. I would like to thank everyone that has supported me in the past and into the future. Our team for the 2023-2025 term has had some changes and I look forward to working with everyone.
